New Grant Amounts Effective April 2026
SASSA has announced increases to the Older Persons Grant, providing much-needed financial relief to South Africa's senior citizens. The new rates will take effect from April 1, 2026, with automatic implementation for all existing beneficiaries.
New Grant Amounts
- Age 60-74: R2,180 per month (increased from R2,090)
- Age 75 and above: R2,200 per month (increased from R2,110)
These increases represent a 4.3% adjustment aimed at helping senior citizens cope with rising living costs, particularly in healthcare, medication, and basic necessities.
Who Qualifies for the Older Persons Grant?
The Older Persons Grant is available to South African citizens, permanent residents, and refugees who meet specific criteria:
Basic Requirements
- Must be 60 years or older
- Must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee
- Must reside in South Africa at the time of application
- Must pass the means test
- Must not be cared for in a state institution
- Must not be receiving another social grant for themselves
Means Test Criteria
To qualify, your income and assets must not exceed these limits:
For Single Persons:
- Annual income must not exceed R95,400
- Assets must not exceed R1,372,800
For Married Persons:
- Combined annual income must not exceed R190,800
- Combined assets must not exceed R2,745,600
Impact of the Increase
While the increase may appear modest, it's important to understand its significance in the context of South Africa's social welfare system. With over 4 million beneficiaries, the Older Persons Grant is a critical lifeline for many senior citizens who have no other source of income.
Additional R90 per Month Makes a Difference
For many beneficiaries living on fixed incomes, these increases help offset rising costs:
- Contributes toward medication co-payments
- Helps cover increased food prices
- Assists with transportation costs to clinics
- Provides a buffer for utility bill increases
Special Provisions for Persons 75 and Older
Recognizing that healthcare and support needs typically increase with age, SASSA provides an additional R20 per month for beneficiaries aged 75 and above. This age-related top-up acknowledges the extra costs associated with advanced age.

Managing Your Grant Wisely
Tips to make your Older Persons Grant last the entire month:
Create a Monthly Budget
- List all essential expenses (food, medication, rent/utilities)
- Prioritize necessities over wants
- Track spending to identify areas where you can save
Save on Healthcare Costs
- Use public clinics for free healthcare and medication
- Keep all clinic cards and prescriptions up to date
- Ask about generic medication options (usually cheaper)
Reduce Food Costs
- Buy store brands instead of name brands
- Purchase non-perishables in bulk when on special
- Plan meals for the week to avoid wastage
- Consider community food gardens or feeding schemes
Reporting Changes in Circumstances
You must report the following changes to SASSA immediately:
- Change of address or contact number
- Changes in income or assets
- Admission to a state institution
- Changes in marital status
- If you leave South Africa for more than 3 months
Failure to report changes may result in suspension or cancellation of your grant, and you may be required to repay money received incorrectly.
Looking Ahead: Future Increases
The Department of Social Development reviews grant amounts annually as part of the national budget process. Future increases are typically announced in February each year and implemented from April.
These adjustments consider:
- Inflation rates and Consumer Price Index (CPI)
- Cost of living increases
- Government fiscal capacity
- National economic conditions
