International Museum Day was established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977, and has grown with each successive year. Last year nearly 40 000 museums, spread across 158 countries, participated in the event, and the ICOM hopes to see this figure rising even further in 2019.
The theme for this year’s festivities is ‘Museums as Cultural Hubs’, emphasising the important role that museums play in understanding and acceptance of cultures that our different to our own.
In a world that seems intent on dividing people, whether it’s in terms of race, religion or some other arbitrary characteristic, teaching tolerance and appreciation for different cultures is vital.
Tomorrow, Thursday the 16th May, the eThekwini Municipality, in partnership with the ICOM, will be hosting a discussion on the topic of Museums as Cultural Hubs. The event will take place between 10h00 and 14h00 at the Old Court House Museum.
