Next month sees UKZN Special Collections hosting the 2019 Preservation Conservation Conference in collaboration with Africa Media Online and the South African Preservation and Conservation Group. The theme for this year’s conference, Disaster Prevention Preparedness, Response & Recovery of Collective Collections and E-collections, will focus on preventing potential disasters that contribute to the deterioration or total loss of research resources, including electronic information.
The two day programme will include tours of the various museums and special collections in and around the Pietermaritzburg area. Discussions will centre around issues such as pest infestations, safety and security, environmental factors, and the design and structure of buildings. The second day of the conference will focus specifically on disaster management in digital libraries, digital preservation, and lessons learnt from scanning and digitisation projects.
The 2019 Preservation Conservation Conference is set to take place on the 25th and 26th September, at the UKZN’s Pietermaritzburg Campus. Registration for the conference closes tomorrow, the 8th August.
Running alongside the Preservation Conference will be the Heritage Digital Campus hosted by Africa Media Online and the Digitise Africa Trust. The campus will provide training in digital archiving and digital curation, and will run for three full days on the 23rd, 24th and 27th September.
