Registration is currently open for the 2019 SAMA (South African Museums Association) conference, which takes place between the 21st and 24th October at the Msunduzi Museum in Pietermaritzburg.
Following this year’s International Museum Day, the theme for the 2019 SAMA conference is Museums as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition. The theme highlights the importance of the relationship between museums and their surrounding communities, and the role that museums should play in promoting cultural awareness, and cultivating partnerships that promote cultural life.
The sub-theme for the conference, The Future of Tradition, is an interesting one in the context of South Africa, where the importance of respecting cultural traditions, and finding a place for certain traditions in a modern context, is often hotly debated. The conference will provide the opportunity for discussions on how institutions can best represent tradition both now and into the future.
