In addition to the scores of articles written for the various websites that fall under the curatorship of Durban Local History Museums, the department also publishes an annual magazine, entitled Umlando.* Filled with updates of what the Local History Museums have been up to throughout the year, the magazine also contains unique articles compiled by our various researchers and museum and education officers. It is definitely well worth a read!
The latest issue of Umlando, published earlier this year, features as its cover story the centenary of the SS Mendi, which tragically sunk on the 21st February 1917. Issue 8 also includes some fascinating pieces on South Africa’s liberation history with 2017 being declared the Year of OR Tambo. Last year also marked the 40th anniversary of the death of Stephen Bantu Biko and the 50th commemoration of the death of Chief Albert Luthuli with Gugu Ntshangase and Rebecca Naidoo researching the legacies of these two great men.
Umlando was first published in 2011, and all eight back copies are available for reading online. The museum is also happy to send out hard copies of the magazine to interested parties. Should you wish to obtain a copy of the latest issue of Umlando then please make contact with the editor, Steven Kotze: Steven.Kotze@durban.gov.za
*Umlando is the isiZulu word for ‘history’
