Cato Manor, a township boasting a unique multi-cultural community, informal settlements and various religious sites, is perhaps best known for its dramatic history of forced removals.
About the museum
The heritage centre features large black and white photographic prints displaying the stark realities of evictions, rebellion, riots and suppression. The exhibits connect to the "Durban System" — administrative policies implemented by city officials — linking this centre thematically to the KwaMuhle Museum.
A new museum in progress
The current facility occupies a small site, but expansion is planned. During 2011 the Municipality acquired a donation of land from the University of KwaZulu-Natal for the building of a new museum. Construction began in 2012, with the Local History Museums collaborating with the Cato Manor Area Based Management and the National Lottery Distribution Fund.
