Mpumalanga Heritage Museum

Situated in the Mpumalanga Township in Hammarsdale, roughly 50km west of Durban's city centre, the Mpumalanga Heritage Centre serves as a site of memory for the surrounding community.

About the museum

The facility functions as both an educational resource and visitor orientation centre within the Durban Local History Museums network. Completed in July 2014 following community consultation, it presents two interconnected historical narratives: political violence from 1983–1992, and the decades of peace and democratic governance that followed.

Exhibitions

Between 1985 and 1991 the township experienced intense political conflict between Inkatha-aligned and UDF/ANC-aligned groups, resulting in deaths and displacement. The centre uses filmed oral testimony from survivors as primary educational material, supplemented by textual and graphic displays about key events and the peace process of 1991–1993, which culminated in the 1993 Africa Peace Award.
